With so many Smartphone Brands around, only a few have managed to come on top. And they are predominantly Chinese as you would expect. Xiaomi is a Chinese electronics company established in 2010. In just a span of 9 years, Xiaomi has made the list in the Global Fortune 500. Originally founded as a smartphone brand, Xiaomi has now fully expanded in various markets like mobile apps, televisions, laptops, earphones, trimmers and fitness bands. At the start of 2018, Xiaomi was the world’s fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer leading the market in China as well as India. As of 2019, Xiaomi is still the number one smartphone brand in India as far as market share is concerned. Xiaomi is often mentioned as the ‘king of budget smartphones’. India is still a developing nation, so it makes sense that the company that tops the budget smartphone market in terms of sale will hold a higher percentage of shares in the market (one that is affordable to the common populace).

Samsung was an established brand in India long before Xiaomi. It is a South Korean multinational company and is the biggest company on this list; maybe bigger than all of the other companies combined. Samsung started out as a trading company but it has now dipped toes in just about any market you could think of. But even after all this, Samsung has not managed to come on top of the smartphone brand hierarchy in India. Their market share is almost the same as Xiaomi, just 3% less. But you have to keep in mind that Samsung is an 81-year-old company and Xiaomi is just nine. Samsung is currently second, but their lastest Galaxy M-Series phones are showing promise of getting Samsung back to the top of the budget smartphone game.

Vivo comes in next, with almost 11% market share as of 2019. It is a Chinese tech company first established in 2009. Since its inception, VIVO has expanded into more than 100 countries starting their expansion in 2014. In 2015, Vivo achieved their spot among the 10 best smartphone manufacturers on the planet with a global market share of 2.7% which as you can imagine is huge. The company also develops apps specifically for Vivo smartphones, distributed through its own app store. In 2016, Vivo became the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League for six years as you would if you were Vivo. It is safe to say that Vivo’s success in India is largely due to their cheap but quality budget smartphones (other brands should take notes).

Realme is a Chinese tech company which was originally a part of Oppo but split up with them in 2018. The real kicker is that this brand is beating its parent brand Oppo as far as the Indian market is concerned. The difference is not much, but it is interesting nonetheless. Realme also manufactures a variety of products other than smartphones such as earphones, fitness bands and backpacks. In the first half of 2019, Realme has reportedly entered more than 20 international markets successfully including China, India, South East Asia and Europe. Currently, this brand has more than 10 million (1 crore) users worldwide.

Oppo holds fifth place in the Indian smartphone market. The Oppo brand was registered in China in 2001 and was established as a company in 2004. In 2016, Oppo became the largest smartphone manufacturer in China. Since then, they have expanded into multiple countries like India. In 2019, Oppo and was ranked the fifth-best smartphone brand globally. As you may know, Oppo company has recently started to sponsor the Indian International Cricket team and has bought the rights to display their logo on the Indian International Cricket team’s official jersey. This showcases that they are not taking the Indian market lightly. But the real reason behind Oppo’s success in India is, you guessed it, their ability to manufacture good quality smartphones at cheap prices. But it still lags behind Realme for some reason (maybe low volume of phones).

OnePlus, too, is another Chinese brand which is doing really well in India at the moment. Their smartphones often called “the flagship killers” have become quite popular in India lately. This brand was first established in 2013 in China. Since then, OnePlus as a company has expanded into more than 34 countries with its smartphones, earphones and even TVs now. They launched their first smartphone OnePlus One in 2014. OnePlus smartphones aren’t exactly budget-friendly, but they are cheap considering their quality. This is probably why OnePlus is currently dominating mid to high range segment of the Indian smartphone market.

Honor is a brand owned by Huawei Technologies that is currently doing well in India. It is a Chinese brand that was founded in 2013. Honor smartphones are cost-effective, to say the least. Along with smartphones, Honor also manufactures wearable devices. This Chinese brand has expanded into 74 countries since its establishment. With the launch of Honor 7 in 2017, this company announced its plans to expand into the Indian market and as a result, double their annual revenue to 5 billion dollars. Honor smartphones mostly come with their EMUI (formerly known as Emotion UI) skin on top of the stock Android OS.

Apple is a globally successful brand but has fallen short in the Indian market at the moment. Honestly, this was supposed to be an article featuring the top seven smartphone brands in India but then we felt really bad for Apple so we included them too. Apple as a company needs no introduction, so we have decided to discuss (briefly) why they aren’t doing so great in India. The main reason is the price (duh) as the quality is never an issue with an iPhone. As we said earlier, if you want to conquer the Indian market you (as a company) must have a compelling budget smartphone series which Apple is lacking at the moment. But if they start a new line-up of budget iPhones specifically made for the Indian market in the future, that’d be great.
